PAUL LOCKHART

"I live on Maryland's Eastern Shore, an area that still basically lives off of the land and resources of the Chesapeake Bay. It is this area that is a constant source of ideas for my sculpture. I strive to honor the people that work the land and water and also the abundant wildlife that share it."

"The acquisition of technical skills learned in the Merchant Marines and my lifelong interest in sketching and painting combine with a love for the balance and beauty in nature. When I begin with an idea and make a study with drawings and photos, consideration for the materials to be used is part of the early planning stage. I use metal plate and rod of bronze, stainless steel and Corten steel. The construction methods and nomenclature are like those used in shipbuilding. A keel rod similar to the anatomical spine is formed, then a complete framework is built to achieve the desired shape. To this superstructure, the plating or 'skin' is welded. The finished work can be painted, but I prefer to use metals that when aged or oxidized yield the desired colors naturally."

Sculptures commissioned by Rouse and Associates have been placed at Westwood Business Park in Annapolis and Longview Business Park in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Other works by Paul Lockhart have been displayed in numerous shows and exhibitions and are included in private collections.

Paul Lockhart's work is admired as much for what it suggests as for what it says outright. The economy of detail and the clean lines of his sculpture tell a story with positive and negative space in perfect balance.
