Howard Schafer is the most widely-collected artist in oil ever to display his work at the Annapolis Marine Art Gallery. His paintings capture everyday moments on the Chesapeake with sunlit clarity and affection. His profound depth of feeling speaks from the canvas with the quiet force of familiarity. He had an appreciation for the Chesapeake Bay, its backwaters and working population, which placed him in the top tier of artists depicting the Chesapeake. Howard also painted tropical subjects and rural maritime scenes of England.
We don't often have consigned Schafers - this is a rare exception. This is a 24" x 20" view of two skipjacks, the "Seagull" in the foreground and the "Kathryn" in the background. The "Seagull's" trailboard is beautifully detailed; the boat's weathered and stained look gives one the feel of decades of hard use. This painting is featured as a large facing-page reproduction on Page 58 of the new book, Howard Schafer - Journey of a Marine Artist, by Bion Bierer
